ILLUME - the deep looking App

ILLUME art mindfully provides guided mindful moments to illuminate how we might connect deeply with a work of art. These guided experiences bring greater awareness to what one is seeing, what one is sensing and feeling when experiencing an artwork. ILLUME uses mindfulness based approaches and a range of contemplative practices to build a more personal connection with art. We invite you to begin your journey alongside one of ILLUME's international guides here

ILLUME was created as an audio-driven platform intended to be used while within a wide range of international galleries, where the viewer might take the opportunity to experience one, two or three artworks for an extended period.

Our App’s first ‘pivot’ – after witnessing dramatic changes in post-pandemic museum audience behaviour - has now seen the platform optimised for tablet and desktop/laptop computers, so that artworks from galleries around the world can now be viewed from the comfort of your home.

The earliest thinking around ILLUME began during the “big pause” (2020-2022) in a virtual dialogue that took place between colleagues in Australia and the UK. With galleries closed and the time and space to dream, we asked ourselves, what if we could enable thousands, even millions of people to connect to art in a deeper, more mindful way? A few years, many conversations and several around the world trips later, we are now well on our way to bringing this vision into something awesome.

Building on a decade of research, and in parallel to running in-person sessions on the art of deep looking for more than 7 years at various art galleries & cultural centres, we have distilled insights to forge a vision for the ILLUME - art mindfully App.

We’ve included two samples here: above is is our introduction to the ILLUME App - Why art mindfully and how does it all work?

The one below takes you to one of van Gogh’s most famous paintings at the Metropolitan in New York - Wheat Field with Cypresses, 1889.
